ANNOUNCES ITS 8TH AND BIGGEST EDITION

8th edition of South Asia’s largest and most important international festival for contemporary movement arts is back in its home-city Bengaluru scheduled from 03 to 12 February 2017. Last edition saw the theme Dance Connect being reflected in networks that formed on various levels. While the initiatives of Attakkalari to encourage young, upcoming and talented dance-makers created a stronger and vibrant dance community, the theme also found resonances in large ways where invested cultural managers and decision makers from across the globe were invited to view the contemporary movement arts scene from South Asia in Bengaluru. These multiple interactions and possibilities of future collaborations led to forging of relations which promise to strengthen the culture of dissemination and appreciation of contemporary movement arts in India and, indeed across South Asia.

      Attakkalari India Biennial 2017 guarantees to be a 10-day long event of engagement with contemporary movement and digital arts to see the coming of age of contemporary movement in Bengaluru and India, and its emerging role as a strong cultural component in the world of performance and affiliated arts. This edition will see the furthering of the links that were fostered owing to the reputation garnered by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts and the sustaining goodwill of its supporters and well-wishers with its theme BLR Moves. The theme has been devised keeping in mind the idea of shaking up Bengaluru to animation and groove with our many masterclasses, workshops and other lead-up activities which would integrate the dance enthusiastic public into the festival.

CENTRE-STAGE

Featuring internationally acclaimed dance companies from across the world, the Attakkalari India Biennial 2017 brings Bengaluru alive with performances every day. This year’s Centre-Stage will present performances from South Korea, South Africa, France, India, Spain, Poland, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Canada, and Switzerland across multiple venues in Bengaluru.

    A new addition to the festival in 2017, Platform Plus presents Indian artists who have carved a niche with their work and have emerged as important players in the field of contemporary movement arts.

    • Platform 17

    Platform 17 is amongst the Biennial’s initiatives to provide avenues for emerging choreographers from the South Asia region. In this edition, as we have in the past, we bring to you the independent and exciting voices from across the South Asia region. The Platform has been received with an overwhelming response in its last three editions, from the audiences, dance-makers and artists, and the arts community in general.

    • FACETS RESIDENCY

    The choreographic journey began on 02 January, 2017 for 7 new and promising residents FACETS International Choreography Residency programme offers emerging choreographers an inter-disciplinary approach to develop new work and/or further develop their existing work. The participants will undergo a five-week long intense training while being mentored by adept and internationally acclaimed experts including choreographers, light designers, composers, theatre directors and digital artists. The residency will work as a collective with common technique/ skill sharing sessions, feedback forums, with production rehearsals to meet each choreographer's individual needs.

    • Off-Stage Interventions

    Some performances don’t need a stage, just an audience. And there are other performances which would fit anywhere but a stage. At the Attakkalari India Biennial 2017, Off-Stage Interventions presents performances set in the city that aim to engage and intrigue their audiences in exciting new ways.

    • Writing on Dance Laboratory

    The Writing on Dance Laboratory is an integral part of the Attakkalari India Biennial. An intensive, collaborative workshop, the ten-day Lab brings together arts writers of diverse backgrounds to discuss, critique, and imagine new possibilities for dance writing in South Asia. Participants attend festival performances and talks by specially invited experts from various disciplines. These conversations form the starting points for workshop participants to write their responses to festival happenings. These writings are posted on Ligament, Attakkalari's online magazine (www.ligament.in).

    Bringing together theorists, artists and producers, Conversations at the Attakkalari India Biennial aim to address pressing issues and explore new modes of creation, linking concepts, theory, and the practice of movement arts.

    Studio Encounters

    The Biennial’s visiting dance companies offer masterclasses for amateurs and professionals, inviting the Indian dance community into their techniques and histories of movement.
